There’s nothing like the sight of a flag flying high in your yard, and today, we’re tackling the installation of a 20ft flagpole to make that happen! This project is a great way to show off your pride while adding a bold feature to your outdoor space. Here’s how we did it!
Tools used for project
- Yescom 20ft Flag Pole
- LED Flag Pole light
- Shovel
- Post hole digger/Auger
- Sacrete (3 Bags)
- Water access
- Gloves
- Wheelbarrow (for supplies transport)
Step 1: Digging the Hole
To start, we needed a solid foundation. We dug a hole that was 12 inches wide and 24 inches deep. This depth ensures the flagpole will have the stability it needs to withstand wind and weather. We used a post hole digger (available here) as well as just a shovel. If you haver access to a power auger (amazon link) it would make digging much quicker!

Step 2: Preparing the Base
Next, we placed a sonotube in the hole to help shape the concrete base. Before pouring in the concrete, we layered some gravel at the bottom to aid with drainage and prevent shifting over time.

Step 3: Pouring the Concrete
Using three bags of Sacrete, we filled the sonotube, ensuring a strong and sturdy anchor. It’s important to check for leveling at this stage—your flagpole needs to be perfectly upright before the concrete sets!

Step 4: Assembling and Raising the Flagpole
We used the Yescom 20ft Black Sectional Flag Pole Kit (which you can check out here). This sectional design made it easy to assemble before raising it into place. After securing it, we let the concrete fully cure before attaching our flags.
Step 5: Installing the Solar Light
To keep the flag illuminated at night, we added the Deluxe Flag Pole Light Solar Powered (available here). This 1300-lumen light keeps Old Glory shining bright from dusk till dawn with 100% flag coverage. No wires, no hassle—just a beautifully lit flag all night long!

Final Thoughts
This flagpole installation was simple, effective, and rewarding. Whether you’re flying the Stars and Stripes or repping your favorite team (Go Packers!), this setup will ensure your flag is proudly displayed in any weather.
